Frequently asked questions
How is “你好” counted?
It has two Han characters, two grapheme characters and a mixed count of two, while word segmentation can treat it as one word. Mixed count adds Han characters to non-Han words, so “你好 hello” counts as three.
Do character counts include spaces, newlines and emoji?
The with-spaces count includes spaces but excludes line breaks. The without-whitespace count also excludes tabs and spaces. Joined emoji and combining accents count as grapheme clusters, not UTF-8 bytes or UTF-16 units.
How are paragraphs and sentences detected?
Paragraphs are nonempty text lines. Sentences use Unicode sentence segmentation; abbreviations, unusual punctuation and browser language data can affect boundaries.
How is reading time estimated?
It uses 300 Han characters per minute plus 200 non-Han words per minute and rounds up. This is an estimate, not a measurement; technical reading and speaking can take different amounts of time.
Will the count exactly match Microsoft Word?
Not necessarily. Programs use different rules for punctuation, segmentation, line breaks and emoji. Use the counting rule required by your publisher or assignment.
